HMI Panels and Touchscreens

HMI stands for Human Machine Interface. It refers to the hardware and software that enables an operator to interact with a machine, process, or control system, typically through a touchscreen, buttons, or display panel mounted directly on equipment or a control cabinet.

An HMI is the visual interface operators use to monitor and interact with a system, displaying data such as alarms, process values, and controls. A PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) is the industrial computer that executes the control logic, reading sensor inputs and driving outputs. The HMI communicates with the PLC via protocols like Modbus TCP/IP or Ethernet/IP but does not perform the control logic itself.

Common options include resistive touchscreens, which work well with gloves and styluses and are cost-effective, and projected capacitive (PCAP) touchscreens, which offer multi-touch support and higher optical clarity. Resistive screens are often preferred for washdown or glove-friendly applications, while PCAP is favored for kiosk and clean environments requiring precise touch response.

For food, beverage, and pharmaceutical washdown areas, an IP66, IP67, or IP69K rated front panel is recommended since these ratings certify resistance to high-pressure water jets and dust ingress. Stainless steel housings with sealed M12 connectors are typically used to meet strict hygienic and corrosion-resistance requirements in these settings.

Standard industrial HMI panels typically operate between 0°C and 50°C, while ruggedized models rated for -20°C to 60°C are better suited for outdoor kiosks, marine vessels, and unconditioned facilities. Always check both operating and storage temperature specifications when selecting a panel for extreme climates.
